Elephant Rock (Roccia dell'Elefante) is a large mass of trachyte stone standing beside State Road 134, just outside Castelsardo. The origin of this rock is quite unique: part of the rocky complex of Monte Casteddazzu, it broke off and rolled down the valley along the road. Following a process of erosion, the rock assumed, from ancient times and in the collective imagination, the appearance of a primordial pachyderm with its trunk turned towards the road. Elephant Rock is also known as Sa Pedra Pertunta, the perforated rock, with an evident evocation of its particular forms. Inside, at later times and at different heights, two domus de janas of Neolithic age were formed, which conserve reliefs of a certain importance and primitive symbols from the animal and plant worlds. The spaces formed in the rock are small and almost all have an antechamber. The walls of the numerous irregularly shaped chambers have relief decorations, cow horns and bull heads on a low base formed in the rock.
